Project history: First really oceangoing submarines, notably differing by dimensions from earlier ships. According to early twenties naval science tendency they intended for operations together with surface squadrons. As well as the majority of fleet submarines of all countries, they were recognized to not answering their tasks in this role and laid up into reserve soon after war. Unreliable NLSE diesels were replaced by MAN before commission.
