Project history: Quite successful boats, development of previous 'O' class, but faster and having stronger artillery (a long-barrelled gun). 20 submarines entered service the first (R1-20), were built under Holland project, second seven (R21-27) were built under Lake project. The latter were appeared unsuccessful. Saddle-tank hull.

Modernizations: 1939-1940, most survived: - 1 x 1 - 76/50; + 1 x 1 - 12.7/90, JK sonar

1940s, most survived: - SC sonar; + SD or SJ radar, QB or QC, JP sonars

Naval service: R12 was lost 12.6.1943 off Key West (Florida) during training diving.
