Project history: Efficient submarine design, completed after long experiments with many classes. Development of 'N' class. There were two subgroups: 10 submarines of first ones were built under project of Holland (O1-10), 6 submarines of the second (Î11-16) under Lake project. Latter appeared unsuccessful. Saddle-tank hull.

Modernizations: 1939-1940, most survived: - 1 x 1 - 76/23; + 1 x 1 - 12.7/90, JK sonar

1940s, most survived: + SD or SJ radar

Naval service: Submarines of this class were used basically for training. O5 was rammed and sunk by s/s Abangarez near Lemon Bay (Panama Canal Zone) 28.10.1923. O9 foundered by mechanical failure 20.6.1941 in 15nm off Portsmouth.
