Project history: All boats of this class experienced considerable difficulties with their diesel engines, appeared too unreliable and not provided project specifications. Three submarines of the class failed to pass their engine tests and, even after overhaul, three of the class failed their final trials.

Modernizations: none.

Naval service: No significant events.
