Project history: Grayback and Growler were laid down as sisters to Darter, then cut in two and lengthened by ~15m to accommodate two cylindrical hangars for Regulus missiles.

Modernizations: 1964: - 2 x 1 Regulus I SSM launchers (4 SSM-N-8)

(11/1967-5/1969, Mare Island N Yd): length was increased to 101.8m (2670st/3650t); missile hangars were converted to 'lock out' swimmers and swimmer delivery vehicles (SDV), fin was raised; + BQG-4 PUFFS sonar

Naval service: Both were decommissioned in May 1964 when Regulus was retired. However, Grayback was converted to amphibious transport (LPSS). She was reclassified as on attack submarine in 1975, apparently without any further changes. A similar planned conversion of her sister ship was cancelled in view of the high cost of die first conversion.
