Project history: The prototype of the new ASDS (Advanced SEAL Delivery System) was ordered in 1994 planned to been delivered in 1997, but program was delayed due cost raising. The craft was been transportable by C-5 and C-17 cargo planes and was designed to mate via her underside hatch to SSN688 class submarine. Though operational requirements called for six units, coast and problems with propulsion and noise limited plans for a maximum of 3 units. and in 2006 the program was cancelled and limited only by the prototype.
The 14 batteries were carried in individual external titanium cylinders, ballast tanks were fitted within each end of pressure hull. 8 retractable electric maneuvering thrusters were mounted in an X-configuration fore and aft. Two holding masts supported communications antennas and electro-optical periscope.
Modernizations: None.
Naval service: In November 2008 ASDS1 was badly damaged in a fire (cause was not be determined) and was never been repaired.
