Project history: Intended for reduce dependence on foreign ports by permitting the at-sea transfer of personnel and vehicles from large cargo ships onto LCACs for transport ashore. Design based on the commercial Alaska class crude oil carrier. Hull size and stability, combined with the ability to ballast, permit at-sea transfers in Sea State 3 conditions. Add-on modules support a vehicle staging area, side-port ramp, large mooring fenders and vessel lanes for up to 3 LCAC, 2550m² of vehicle parking and equipment stowage space, 1438m³ aviation fuel and 378m³ storage. Forth unit became afloat forward staging base (AFSB), supporting mine countermeasures, counterpiracy and counterterrorism operations, later it was decided to complete third ship in this configuration. In June 2015 ships were reclassified from T-MLP (Mobile Landing Platform) and T-AFSB (Afloat Forward Staging Base) to T-ESD (Expeditionar Transfer Dock) and T-ESB (Expeditionary Mobile Base) respectively.
Modernizations: None.
Naval service: No significant events.
