Project history: Under the FY1940 program building of two minelayers of Terror class and four netlayers under very close design was provided. Just before they were laid down it was offered to redesign these ships to fast landing transports, and the amount of works could be brought to minimum thanks to the hull structure with the extensive covered deck aft originally intended for placing of mines or nets. Though the plan of re-equipment has not been accepted, and ships have laid down mine- and netlayers, they were not commissioned in this quality. With entering of the USA to Second World War building of landing ships has received a high priority, and in 1943 shipbuilders have returned to refused in 1941 project of re-equipment of minelayers to landing transports. High, in comparison with other landing ships, speed and covered cargo deck have predetermined them enough specific assignment: disembarkation of the first wave of "rangers" on DUKW and LVT vehicles. The latter were floated on a special ramp or by crane fitted aft. Besides the vehicles, every ship carried 14-19 LCVP on davits.
