Project history: One of the most unusual landing ships of the Second World War. They were designed under the technical project developed by British Admiralty. In aft part of hull flooded dock chamber was arranged in which took places 2-3 LCT landing crafts with tanks or up to 14 LCM with a landing party. In the sea dock chamber was dryed, in place of disembarkation ship received water ballast into special tanks, and draught aft increased on some metres, dock chamber was filled by water, and landing crafts went out it under own engines, following to a disembarkation place. In total it has been ordered 27 ships-docks, 4 were transferred to RN by lend-lease.
Modernizations:
None.1/1946, all: 1 x 1 - 127/38 Mk 30, 2 x 4 - 40/60 Mk 2, 2 x 2 - 40/60 Mk 1, 16 x 1 - 20/70 Mk 10, SF or SG or SL or SU radar
Naval service: Shadwell 24.1.1945 was damaged by Japanese air torpedo in Philippines area. Fort Snelling was cancelled in 1945 and completed as mercantile vessel Carib Queen. Later she was acquired by the Navy and used as MSTS cargo vessel Taurus. From 1963 she was classified as landing ship (T-LSV8).
