Project history: Built under 1925-1928 programmes, presented development of of the previous class with strengthened protection, differed by exclusively good seagoing capacities. Cruisers a little differed among themselves. Suffren and Colbert had on two coal-burning boilers and their protection of engine rooms and aft boiler rooms was strengthened by 2m-wide bunkers.
Last two ships of class had an internal armoured belt and, accordingly, lost a longitudinal armoured bulkhead. Armour weight for Suffren was 951t, for Colbert and Foch 1374t, and for Dupleix 1533t. More weak torpedo armament since the second ship of class became a payment for strengthened protection. Colbert, Foch and Dupleix had only two triple TTs instead of four on Suffren.
On trials they reached from 32.51 (Suffren) to 33.06 (Colbert) knots.
Ship protection, Suffren, Colbert: 50mm armour belt with 2.56m height protected machinery spaces. Upper deck amidships was 25mm, main deck had 18mm thickness. Magazines had box-shaped protection with 50mm longitudinal bulkheads and 20mm transverse bulkheads and crowns.
Ship protection, Foch: 54mm longitudinal bulkhead was 5.5-6.1m-high, connecting abreast aft machinery spaces with double bottom by 40mm lower part. Upper deck amidships was 22mm (small area near centerline was 20mm), main deck had 18mm thickness. Magazines had box-shaped protection with 54mm longitudinal bulkheads and 20mm transverse bulkheads and crowns. Steering gear compartment had 26-18mm protection.
Ship protection, Dupleix: 60mm longitudinal bulkhead was 5.5-6.1m high, its part abreast aft machinery was double, consisting of two 40-20mm layers, and connected with double bottom. Upper deck amidships was 22mm (small area near centerline was 20mm), main deck between armoured longitudinal bulkheads had 30mm thickness. Magazines had box-shaped protection with 54mm longitudinal bulkheads and 20mm transverse bulkheads and crowns. Steering gear compartment had 26-18mm protection.

Naval service: Suffren in July, 1940 was disarmed at Alexandria and 30.5.1943 came over to the side of Gaullist Government in Algeria. She was paid id off into reserve in October, 1947 (really she was used as hulk since that time).
Remaining ships remained under control of Vichy. Colbert, Foch and Dupleix were scuttled 27.11.1942 at Toulon. Foch and Dupleix were raised by Italians in April and July 1943 respectively, but never repaired. Former was broken up, latter was sunk by Allied aircraft in 1944.
