Project history: Wooden-hulled ships but with iron beams and longitudinals. There was a very pronounced curved ram bow and a short forecastle and overhanging stern. Rigault de Genouilly was rigged as a barque without royals and Éclaireur as a ship. In both the 139mm were on the upper deck broadside with a bow and a stern chaser.

Modernizations: 1890, Rigault de Genouilly: was reboilered with Belleville boilers.

Naval service: No significant events.
