Project history: A complete break with previous cruisers in this size range and the forerunner of the protected cruisers of the Forbin and Troude classes. The Milan was steel-hulled with a pronounced plough bow, overhanging stern, forecastle and poop. There were three light raking masts with a fore and aft rig, and two raking funnels abaft the foremast. The ship was lightly gunned and it had at one time been proposed to build her as an unarmed scout. The 100mm guns were on the forecastle and poop with originally one on either beam in addition. Her engines were complicated and bulky but appear to have worked well after some alterations. Propeller vibration was excessive at high speed.
