Project history: Of higher freeboard than the Forbin and Troude classes with a forecastle deck nearly to the stern, two funnels and two widely spaced masts. Lavoisier was fitted to burn oil fuel with coal.
Ship protection: The 139mm guns were in upper deck sponsons with 75mm shields, and the 100mm were at bow and stern with 50mm shields. There was a small CT with 125mm armour and the curved armour deck was 40mm with a cofferdam above and a light debris deck over the engines.
Modernizations: 1900s, all: - 2 x 1 - 37/20, 4 x 5 - 37/20; + 2 x 1 - 47/40 M1885
