Project history: Wooden-hulled ships rigged as barques without royals. There was a short forecastle and Champlain, Dupetit-Thouars and Infernet had straight stems whilst Laclocheterie had clipper bow. The 139mm guns were on the upper deck broadside with a bow and stem chase gun. Tripod masts were tried in Infernet, and originally this ship had 3-7.6in guns, forward, midships and aft on the centreline, but they were removed after storm damage in January 1871.
