Project history: First large ships built in France after First World War, built under the 1922 programme. They became first-ever light cruisers with artillery placed in superfiring closed turrets. Practically had no serious armour protection. Partly its absence was indemnified by a double bottom and presence of 16 transverse bulkheads. Differed by strong torpedo armament.
On trials all reached designed speed at full load. Differed by good seaworthiness, to lacks it is possible to refer short endurance, especially on the high speed.
Ship protection: Magazines and steering gear had box-shaped 20mm protection. There was no belt.

Naval service: Duguay Trouin was a part of Force "X" and was disarmed at Alexandria in July, 1940, since July, 1943 served with the Allies. After war till 1952 she was used as depot ship. Lamotte-Picquet was the largest French ship in Indo-China. She was laid up at Saigon in September, 1942 and used as training hulk. Cruiser was bombed in Cam Ranh Bay by USN carrier aircraft (TF38.2) 12.1.1945. Primauguet also remained under the control of Vichy. During Allied landing to Casablanca she was hard damaged by gunfire of American cruisers and SBD carrier diving bombers, ran aground and became a total loss.
