Project history: A two-funnelled cruiser with a pronounced plough bow, overhanging stern and considerable tumblehome. There were originally two large military masts. There was a 165mm gun on forecasle and poop with four in upper deck sponsons. The boilers were replaced bv 10 Niclausse in 1901. The TT were later reduced to 4 and finally 2.
Ship protection: The armour deck was curved from 0.5m above water to 1.1m below amidships with a max total thickness of 50mm increased to 100mm at the slopes. There was a cofferdam about 1.2m wide above the armour deck, and the small CT had 70mm armour.
Modernizations: 1901: boilers were replaced by 10 Niclausse; - 2 - 350 TT (1 bow, 1 stern)
1900s: - 2 - 350 TT (beam)
