Project history: A group of wooden-hulled ships, mostly barque-rigged without royals and differing in detail. The 165mm gun or one of the 139mm guns was mounted on the forecastle with a 139mm on a raised platform aft and the others on the broadside. Beautemps-Beaupré and Bourayne had tripod foremasts.
Modernizations: 1870s, Bourayne, Dayot: were armed as later ships
1870s, all: + (2 - 8) x 5 - 37/17 Hotchkiss
Naval service: Dayot was lost in a cyclone at Tamatave 28.2.1888.
