Project history: Generally resembled the Parseval, but the masts and funnel were not raked. The 139mm guns were mounted fore and aft with two amidships on the centreline, the 90mm replacing the forward 139mm in the two ships with it.

Modernizations: 1880s, Voltigeur: reboilered with Beleville boilers

Naval service: Labourdonnais was wrecked 21.2.1893 off Madagascar on Sainte-Marie.
