Project history: A wooden-hulled ship with no plating outside the armour. There was a bronze pointed ram 3m below water, and the Belliqueuse was rigged as a barque with 1450m², later increased to 1770m² of sail. The 194mm and 4 165mm guns were in the battery 1.8m above water and 2 165mm, later the 139mm, on the upper deck.
Ship protection: There was a complete belt from the battery deck to 1.26m below water, but the battery bulkheads were only thin plating.
Modernizations: 1870s: - 4 x 1 - 194/19, 2 x 1 - 165/18; + 4 x 1 - 194/20 M1870, 5 x 1 - 139/21 M1870, 4 x 5 - 37/17 Hotchkiss.
Naval service: No significant events.
