Project history: A ship-rigged, wooden-hulled cruiser with a ram bow and overhanging stern. There was a forecastle and poop with the funnel abaft the foremast. The 165mm guns were in upper deck sponsons with 20 139mm on the main deck broadside and the other 2 on forecastle and poop.

Modernizations: 1891: re-boilered (4000hp, 17kts); - 6 x 1 - 139/28; + 4 x 5 - 37/17 Hotchkiss.

Naval service: No significant events.
