Project history: Two-funnelled cruisers with plough bows, tumblehome and in Alger an overhanging stern. There were originally two large military masts. The 165mm were in fore and aft upper deck sponsons with four 139mm in midships ones, one 139mm under the forecastle and one on the poop. The class were reckoned to be good steamers, and the early use of Belleville boilers in Alger should be noted.

Ship protection: In Isly and later in Jean Ban 139mm guns had 50mm shields. The CT had 50/75mm and the curved armour deck was 50mm total on the flat amidships with 100mm max on the slopes. There was a cofferdam 0.8m wide above the armour deck and an early type of cellular layer.

Modernizations: 1890s, Jean Bart: 139mm guns received 50mm shields.

1900s, all: - 6 x 1 - 139/30; + 6 x 1 - 139/30 M1893, 2 - 350 TT (beam)

1903, Jean Bart: was reboilered with 8 Niclausse boilers (10000hp, 20kts).

Naval service: Jean Bart was wrecked 11.2.1907 off Sahara coast.
