Project history: Authorized under the Act of 2.3.1889. Cut in half and lengthened by 4.3m to correct instability, this class consisted of single-funnelled, two-masted ships, usually rated as sloops outside the USA.
Ship protection: Two of the 102mm guns were fore and aft, while six were in main deck sponsons with 51mm protection.

Naval service: Castine served as a submarine tender 1908-1913, and the 102mm guns were eventually reduced to two or four in both, and they were reboilered with Normand boilers. Machias was named Agua Prieta by the Mexicans and disposed of in 1935.
