Project history: Ship- or barque-rigged with one funnel, these gunboats differed considerably in machinery. Kansas had engines taken from the cargo of the blockade runner Princess Royal. It would seem that return connecting-rod engines gave the best results.
Modernizations: by 1865, many were rearmed; Kansas was armed with 2 x 1 - 279/15 Dahlgren SB, 2 x 1 - 229/15 Dahlgren SB, 1 x 1 - 107/24 30pdr Parrott RML, 5 small guns
by 1921, Yantic: was armed with 4 x 1 - 47/40 Mk I
Naval service: Pequot was sold to Haiti, and Nipsic was 'rebuilt' at Washington Navy Yard, and became one-of the Enterprise class. Yantic was loaned to Naval Militia as TS in 1898 but in 1917 returned to the Navy, recommissioned, stricken in July 1919 but recommissioned again in December and reclassified as unclassified miscellaneous auxiliary IX32 in May 1921. She was again loaned to the Naval Militia in 1926, sunk at pier in Detroit 22.11.1929, finally stricken in 1930 and broken up in 1936.
