Project history: These were the last conventional gunboats built for the US Navy, the later Erie and Charleston were conceived partly as small cruisers. They were modified  Sacramentos, the major changes being quarters for about 60 more enlisted men and 4 rather than two boilers. The lines followed those of the earlier ship, but a 4.6m section was added amidships.

Modernizations: 1942, both: + 4 x 1 - 76/50 Mk 20

1.1946, PG22: 3 x 1 - 102/50 Mk 12, 4 x 1 - 76/50 Mk 20

Naval service: Asheville 3.3.1942 was sunk S off Java by Japanese destroyers Arashi and Nowaki.
