Project history: Shortage of escort forces for service in Atlantic in a beginning of war has jogged the USA to go on a way tested by the Great Britain: building of warships on the unspecialized shipyards which do not have experience of naval shipbuilding. For not to waste time on working out the new project, on sentence of the Maritime commission, as the sample RN frigate of "River" class, designed in 1941 on norms of merchant shipbuilding with the account of abilities of small shipbuilders has been chosen. (US Navy should to receive 10 such Canadian-built ships on "reverse" lend-lease).

Originally new ships were supposed to be referred as gunboats (PG), but then they have invented a new type for them: "patrol frigates" (PF).

Unfortunately, at project conversion under possibilities of the American industry the desire to simplify a construction to please to adaptability to manufacture has led to that, in comparison with the "British" sample, "American" ship has appeared notably worse. Replacement of riveted hull construction by all-welded was not accompanied by corresponding recalculation of durability, and, as consequence, hulls of new ships "cracked" on a wave. Already after commission of all frigates it was necessary to strengthen longitudinal bracings but also after that the hull strength left much to be desired.

Besides problems with a hull strength, these ships possessed still a number of such lacks, as bad manoeuvrability and uncomfortable (to American measures) habitability conditions. Especially minuses of Tacoma class were appreciable against destroyer escorts created for decision of same tasks and carrying the same armament.

In total in 1942 100 ships of this class have been ordered, four were cancelled in 1943-1944 (PF95-98).

Modernizations: None.

Naval service: American ships have been staffed by the personnel of Coast guard. Ships of class serviced basically on Atlantic in the WWII.
