Project history: In the first war years USA was pressed by shortage of escort ships for support of Atlantic convoys. In the beginning of 1942 USA and United Kingdom reached the agreement on delivery of 10 newest frigates of "River" class. British yards were overloaded by military orders, and the order was transferred to Canada. By the time of commission of frigates, need for the help of Allies has disappeared, and Americans commissioned really only two ships.
Modernizations: Asheville, 1944: - 1 x 24 - 178 Hedgehog ASWRL; + 1 x 3 - 305 Squid Mk 3 ASWRL, type 147B sonar (temporarily for tests, replaced again by Hedgehog in 1944)
1.1946, both: 3 x 1 - 76/50 Mk 22, 2 x 2 - 40/60 Mk 1, 4 x 1 - 20/70 Mk 10, 1 x 24 - 178 Hedgehog Mk 10 ASWRL, 8 DCT, 2 DCR (100)
Naval service: Both served in Atlantic.
