Project history: Authorized under the Act of 4.5.1898. Nevada was launched as Connecticut and renamed for the first time in January 1901. They were intended for harbour defence but not a worthwhile expenditure.
Ship protection: The belt was 279mm at the 38mm flat deck edge only, tapering to 203mm at Iwl and to 127mm at the lower edge and at the ends. The funnel uptakes were 152mm for the height of one deck.
Modernizations: none.
Naval service: Tallahasee was used in the firing trials against the Katahdin in 1909, and in other experiments including tests for the suitability of cage masts, while in the same period Cheyenne was employed in oil fuel trials. Latterly they were all employed as submarine tenders for some part of their career, Cheyenne was, finally decommissioned in June 1926 but not sold till 1939. Ozark, Tonopah and Cheyenne were used as submarine tenders from 1913, Tallahassee served as gunnery test ship and submarine tender from August, 1910.
