Project history: Authorized under the Act of 3.3.1887. The 305mm guns were in the fore turret and the 254mm in the after one. Her original design included an armament of 1 406mm and 1 305mm guns together with a 381mm pneumatic Zalinsky gun.
Ship protection: Steel 64mm armour deck was connected with upper edge of iron main belt. The belt tapered from 330mm at the edge of the 64mm deck over it, to 152-127mm at the lower edge, and it was possible to reduce the low freeboard on going into action by means of water ballast tanks. 305mm guns were installed in turret with 203mm sides and 330mm barbette, 254mm in turret with 190mm sides and 292mm barbette. CT had 254mm sides.
Modernizations: none.
Naval service: Monterey in December 1917 became station ship at Pearl Harbor. Monterey also served as submarine base and was sold in February 1922.
