Project history: As with Puritan this class bore little resemblance to the Civil War ships of which they were 'repairs'. Miantonomoh was commissioned when quite incomplete from October 1882 to March 1883, but the completion of the ships as above was not authorized till the Act of 3.8.1886 (Miantonomoh 3.3.1887) - and ordered 1887-1890. They were iron-hulled with steel deck over the belt, and Amphitrite and Monadnock differed from the other two in having barbettes to their turrets, while Terror had pneumatically powered mountings. Monadnock never made her intended 14.5kts, trial speed being 11.63kts.
Ship protection: Steel 44mm armour deck was connected with upper edge of iron main belt. 178 (or 229mm)mm belt extended about 1.2m below and 0.6m above lwl, its thickness was 127mm at ship ends. There were no barbettes, turrets had 292mm sides. Funnel uptakes had 267mm protection, ventilator 229mm. CT had 229mm or 190mm sides.
Modernizations: none.
Naval service: Monadnock served as submarine tender and target tug from January, 1912 but redesignated IX17 only in July, 1921. The other three were rarely in full commission except during the Spanish-American war. Miamonomoh was stricken at the end of 1915 for use as a target but not sold till 1922, and Terror was also stricken at the same time.
