Project history: The first postwar destroyer escorts, these ships were initially conceived as upgraded versions of the wartime 22kt coastal escort (PC) with the additional firepower, sonar and speed required to counter the new generation of submarines. They were also designed with mobilization in mind, hence the single screw for reduced pressure on the gear-cutting industry.
They were fast and seaworthy, but were criticized as being underarmed.
