Project history: These ten improved Smiths were authorized in May 1910. The principal change was replacement of the former single torpedo tubes by twin tubes. They introduced oil fuel for US destroyers. Most had three shafts, but four ships (DD26-27 and DD30-31) had two turbines (Curtis in the Fore River ships, Zoelly in the Cramp ships), with cruising stages incorporated in the main turbines. Cramp, Fore River, and Newport News ships had their two amidships funnels trunked together.
Modernizations: 1915, Mayrant: Zoelly steam turbines were replaced by 2 sets Westinghouse geared steam turbines (13000 hp)
1917 - 1918, all: + 1 DCT (Y-gun), 2 DCR
Naval service: No significant events.
