Project history: Authorized under the Act of 10.6.1896. Classed as a torpedo boat, but her displacement indicates that she was the first US destroyer. Attained 30.13kts on trials. There were two funnels and two single TT abaft the second funnel and far aft.

Naval service: Renamed Coast Torpedo Boat No 5 in August 1918.
