Project history: These ships were built under the FY1934 programme and really were similar to Bethlehem designed Gridley but redesigned under possibilities of naval yards. They differed by stronger hull and machinery repeating accepted on Mahan class. Though Bagley class destroyers have appeared slower than Gridley class, they were considered by naval specialists as much more successful.

Naval service: Jarvis 8.8.1942 during Guadalcanal landing was damaged by Japanese air torpedo from G4M bomber and sunk next day by Japanese aircraft S of Guadalcanal. Blue 22.8.1942 was badly damaged by a torpedo from Japanese destroyer Kawakaze and scuttled next day at Guadalcanal. Henley 3.10.1943 was sunk at coast of New Guinea by Japanese submarine RO108.
Mugford 7.8.1942 was damaged by Japanese aircraft during Guadalcanal landing and was under repair till the end of a year; 16.9.1944 she was damaged by mine, repair lasted till November, 1944, she was again damaged by kamikaze 5.12.1944 and 5.1.1945. Helm was damaged by kamikaze 5.1.1945. Patterson and Ralph Talbot in battle at Sawo island 9.8.1942 were damaged by Japanese ships and were under repair till the end of year. Ralph Talbot was badly damaged by kamikaze 27.4.1945.
Mugford and Ralph Talbot participated in nuclear tests in July, 1946 at Bikini. Both were sunk as targets in 1948 at new weapons tests.
