Project history: Truxtun was essentially a nuclear version of the Belknap class, somewhat enlarged and rearranged to accommodate her power plant. The Nuclear Propulsion organization had originally hoped to duplicate the earlier Bainbridge, but this was rejected in new of the need for the improved SQS-26 sonar.
Modernizations: 1970s: - 2 - 533 TT, 1 DASH drone helicopter; + 1 helicopter (SH-2D Sea Sprite)
1980: - 1 x 2 Terrier SAM / ASROC ASuR (40 RIM-2, 20 RUR-5), 2 x 1 - 76/50, SPS-10, SPS-40, SPS-48, 2x SPG-55, 2x Mk 35 radars; + 2 x 4 Harpoon SSM (8 RGM-84A), 1 x 2 Standard SM-1MR SAM / ASROC ASuR (40 RIM-66, 20 RUR-5), LN-66, SPS-48C, SPS-40D, 2x SPG-55B radars
