Project history: Authorized under the Act of 7.9.1888. Slow and weak ships with no effective deck protection. One 127mm gun was on the upper deck forward and the rest in main deck sponsons.

Ship protection: Protective deck was 13mm at flat and slopes. CT had 51mm sides.

Modernizations: 1899, all: - 3 - 450 TT

1916-1918, Montgomery: - 9 x 1 - 127/40, 6 x 1 - 57/45-50, 2 x 1 - 37/40; + 8 x 1 - 102/50 Mk IX; boilers were replaced by 6 Almy.

1916-1918, Marblehead: - 9 x 1 - 127/40, 6 x 1 - 57/45-50, 2 x 1 - 37/40; + 8 x 1 - 102/50 Mk IX

Naval service: Montgomery served as a torpedo experimental ship 1908-1914. Marblehead was loaned to Naval Militia in 1910-1917.
