Project history: In these ships guided missile was finally made paramount, with guns little more than an afterthought. The need for large numbers of missiles to protect the Fleet against a mounting air threat and the relatively slow rate of new construction led to a decision that new missile ships be double-ended. It had previously been objected that missile mounts in the bow would be so subject to sea damage as to be useless; in the Leahy class special efforts were to protect forward launcher, including the knuckling of the hull, which was uncharacteristic of previous US practice The decision to adopt a forecastle type of hull reflects the explosive growth of space (rather than weight) requirements, a characteristic of modern warship development. As in the Farraguts, ASW was a distinctly secondary consideration, but Leahys were designed to incorporate ASROC (without reloads) and had a bow dome for their SQS-23 sonars.

As in the case of earlier Terrier ships, the Leahy class suffered from limited effectiveness as built, and was subject to extensive modernization.
