Project history: Large corvette classified as sloop of Hartford group.

Modernizations: 1881: - 24 x 1 - 229/15; + 10 x 1 - 203/15 converted rifled Dahlgren SB

Naval service: Lancaster served as station ship since 1898 and as gunnery TS since 1899. In November 1903 she became receiving ship and in March 1912 transferred to civil service. She was stricken officially 31.12.1915.
