Project history: Most famous USN large sloop, Flagship of Admiral Farragut. Sail area was up to 3440 m2 with additional sails.

Modernizations: by 1862: + 1 x 1 - 107/24 30pdr Parrott rifled, 2 x 1 - 93/22 20pdr Parrott rifled

1863: - 2 x 1 - 229/15; + 2 x 1 - 163/22 100pdr Parrott rifled

by 1882, was armed with 16 x 1 - 229/15 Dahlgren SB, 1 x 1 - 203/15 converted rifled Dahlgren SB; VCE engine was installed.

1880s-1890s: + 13 x 1 - 127/40 Mk II/III

Naval service: Hartford was converted to TS for midshipmen in 1899 and in October 1912 transferred to Charleston for harbour use. She was finally decommissioned in August 1926 but preserved and classified as relic in October 1945. She foundered at berth 20.11.1956.
