Project history: Authorized under the Act of 7.9.1888. In these ships 152mm gun was on the upper deck forward, two of the 127mm abreast on the upper deck aft and the remainder in main deck. As originally completed they had fore and aft sails but these were removed in or before 1899.
Ship protection: Sponsons amidships had local 102mm protection. The CT was 51mm and the protective deck 25mm on the flat with slopes 64mm amidships and 51mm fore and aft.
Modernizations: (1899-1901) Cincinnati; (1899-1903) Raleigh: - 1 x 1 - 152/41, 4 - 450TT; + 1 x 1 - 127/40 Mk II; machinery was replaced by new VTE and 8 Babcock & Wilcox boilers, mainmast was removed on Cincinnati
