Project history: Bainbridge was essentially a nuclear-powered equivalent of the Leahy class, built as the prototype nuclear fast task force escort. At the time she represented the minimum platform for a two-reactor power plant which could be expected to attain destroyer speed; a fast submarine plant, such as that in the large Triton, was rejected because it weighed too much for the power it produced to propel a destroyer with a worthwhile payload at an acceptable speed. Destroyer nuclear propulsion was given high priority from about 1956 onwards because destroyer endurance, not carrier endurance, was a limiting factor in carrier task force operations.
Modernizations: 9.1976: - 2 x 2 Terrier SAM (80 RIM-2), 4x SPG-55 radars; + 2 x 2 - Standard SM-1MR SAM (80 RIM-66), LN-66, SPS-43, SPG-55B radars
1978: - 2 x 2 - 76/50, 2x Mk 35 radars; + 2 x 1 - 20/70 Mk 10
1979: - 2 x 1 - 20/70; + 2 x 4 Harpoon SSM (8 RGM-84A), NTDS CCS
4/1985: - 2 x 2 Standard SM-1MR SAM (80 RIM-66), SPS-37, SPS-39, SPS-43, SPS-10F radars, SQS-23 sonar, WLR-1, WLR-3 ECM suites, 2x Mk 28 decoy RL; + 2 x 2 Standard SM-2ER SAM (80 RIM-67), 2 x 6 -20/76 Mk 15 Phalanx, 4 x 1 - 12.7/90, SPS-48C, SPS-49, SPS-67 radars, 2x Mk 90 radars, SQQ-23A PAIR sonar, SLQ-32(v)3 ECM suite, 4 Mk 36 SRBOC decoy RL, T-Mk 6 Fanfare torpedo decoy; ASROC ASuR was deactivated
