Project history: Relatively slow ships protected against new 406mm shells. At first 457mm guns were considered, later they were replaced by 12 406/50mm (but in quadruple turrets to save a length). Finally ships would had hull form as North Carolinas, four main triple turrets and new 127/54mm secondary guns. As a result new very strong protected and heavy armoured ship can not pass existing locks of Panama Canal, and simultaneously money been appropriated for a 3rd set of locks. 5 ships were authorized under the Act of 19.7.1940 but suspended at Presidential direction in April 1942 owing a steel shortage, new locks of Panama Canal were also cancelled. Finally all five ships were cancelled 21.7.1943.

Ship protection: Main belt, inclined at 19° to vertical, would been 409mm thick (on 25mm STS plating) at upper part tapering to 259mm at lower edge. Belt was connected with end barbettes by 457mm fore and 387mm aft bulkheads. Lower belt, inclined at 10°, had 183mm (abreast machinery)-216mm (abreast magazines) thickness at upper edge tapering to 25mm at lower edge. Flat main armour deck was connected with upper edge of belt and was 147mm (on 57mm plating) over citadel. One level higher there was 38mm upper deck. One level lower there was flat 19-16mm splinter deck. Steering gear had own belt and roof. Main gun turrets had 572mm faces. Fore barbettes over main deck were 572mm at the sides, aft barbettes had up to 457mm protection.
