Aircraft facilities: Aircraft fuel stowage was 1 052 200 l. There were 3 heavy cranes for handling seaplanes and transverse catapult H-5. Marine Corps dive bombers can be launched from catapult with landing on coastal airfields.

Project history: Development of Curtiss class. The basic difference was included in the increased sizes of aviation deck on stern. Hangar has been moved fwd, that, in turn, has demanded to re-plan funnels, trunking them into the one. It became the most appreciable visual difference from two-funneled Curtiss class. The following changes brought in the design were transverse catapult on an aviation deck and increased aviation fuel stowage. Being designing in 1941 it was supposed to protect ships by 51mm armour deck (the hull beam was to be increased on 0.7m), but these plans have not been realised. AA armament, in comparison with predecessors, was appreciable strengthened: 2x4 28mm MG mounts and 4 12.7mm MGs were provided. Already before completion unsuccessful 28mm MGs were replaced by 40mm Boforses.

Ship protection: There was 4-compartment underwater protection.

Modernizations: None.

1/1946, all: 4 x 1 - 127/38 Mk 30, 4 x 4 - 40/60 Mk 2, 30 seaplanes, presumably SG, SK, Mk 26 radars

1960s, all survived: + WLR-1, ULQ-6 ECM suites

Naval service: Norton Sound in role of test ship was used in many missiles tests and ended service as Aegis test ship (from 1974).
