Project history: A new type of 'conventional' submarine was announced in September 1979, to replace the Oberons and to make up numbers for training. Although at one time twelve boats were planned this dropped to ten and then nine, but under the 1990-91 defence cuts the class was stopped at four units.

The first four were fitted with Type 2040 sonar, derived from the French Eledone and Netherlands Octopus, but plans to replace this with Type 2075 were dropped in 1991. This class was declared surplus to requirements in 1994.

Modernizations: late 1990s, all: - UAC ECM suite; + UAP(2) ECM suite

Naval service: No significant events.
