Project history: In the early thirties in Britain have made a decision about creation of new patrol submarine for replacement of unsuccessful boats of "O", "Ð" and "R" classes. Under decisions of the 1930 London conference, UK could built the next years submarines with total displacement not more than 16 500t. Proceeding from it displacement of a new submarine was limited by 1000t, that allowed to receive the greatest number of ships, not exceeding limitations.
Design of "Ò" class submarine was approved in 1935. She had saddle-tank construction, fuel tanks were in a pressure hull. Operational diving depth was 95 m. New submarines were 500t lighter than the predecessors but exceeded them on all parametres (armament, manoeuvrability, diving depth), except for surface speed. Number of TTs was increased at the expense of placing them partly out of a pressure hull: two in special bulb in a fore end and two more aside, in a superstructure abreast CT. Torpedoes from the latter launched fwd that ensured a total 10-torpedoes salvo.
Leadship Triton was built under the 1935 Programme, later ships on 1936-1938 Programmes. Last three submarines (Talisman, Tetrarch and Torbay) have welded bulkheads. These boats were equipped with special mine cartridges (on 12-16 mines), arranged in side blisters amidships. Tests have shown, that the similar construction conducts to loss of about 1.5kts and its usage have refused.
Thunderbolt was originally called Thetis, she foundered 1.6.1939 during trials. Submarine was salvaged 23.10.1939, repaired by Cammell Laird and renamed in April 1940.
Modernizations: 1941, Talisman, Tetrarch, Torbay: mine containers (for 12 - 16 mines) were removed, surface speed increased up to 15.25 kts

Naval service: Tarpon was sunk 14.4.1940 by DCs of German minesweeper Ì6 in the North Sea. Thistle was sunk 10.4.1940 by German submarine U4 in the North Sea. Triton was lost 18.12.1940 in Southern Adriactic Sea (probable on a mine). Triad was mined at Bengasi (probable 13.10.1940). Tetrarch was lost on a mine off Sardinia (possibly 27.10.1941). Triumph was lost 14.1.1942 in Mediterranean (possibly on a mine). Talisman was lost 16.9.1942 off Sicily (possibly on a mine). Tigris was sunk 27.2.1943 by German ASW ship UJ2210 in the North Sea. Thunderbolt was sunk by DCs of Italian corvette Cicogna 14.3.1943 in Mediterranean.
