Project history: Development of Shark class. 5 submarines were built under "Emergency war Programme", 13 under 1940 Programme, 15 under 1941 Programme. In comparison with pre-war boats of "S" class, bulkheads were welded and fuel stowage at the expense of storage of part of fuel in specially arranged ballast tanks was increased. Two last boats of the 1941 Programme had all-welded pressure hull, that raised an operational diving depth to 110m. Later fuel stowage of majority submarines was increased to 92t (85t on Scotsman and Sea Devil).
Majority of submarines had additional seventh TT out of a pressure hull. During or already after completion all ships have even more increased fuel stowage at the expense of improvement of ballast tanks construction by 40 or 25t.

Naval service: Ð222 was sunk by DCs of Italian destroyer Fortunale off Naples 12.12.1942. Splendid was sunk by DCs of German destroyer ZG3 Hermes off Corsica 21.4.1943. Sahib was sunk by DCs of Italian corvette Gabbiano off Sicily 24.4.1943. Saracen was sunk by DCs of Italian corvette Minerva in Mediterranean Sea 14.8.1943. Simoom was sunk 15.11.1943 by German submarine U565 in Mediterranean Sea. Stonehenge was lost 20.3.1944 for the unknown reason in Strait of Malacca (Indian Ocean). Syrtis was lost 28.3.1944 on a mine off Norway. Sickle was lost 14.6.1944 in Mediterranean (possibly on a mine). Stratagem was sunk 22.11.1944 by DCs of Japanese patrol ship in Strait of Malacca. Stubborn was sunk in 1946 as a target. Seraph in September 1944 was converted to high speed underwater target. Hull and casing were streamlined, new higher capacity batteries, up-rated motors and "T" class propellers were installed. Maximal speed was increased up to 12.5kts at periscope depth and 16.7kts surfaced. Later Sceptre, Satyr and Statesman were so converted. Seraph and Scotsman were used for trials after war. Safari foundered 8.1.1946 in unmanned condition being towed to breakers.
