Project history: The further development of "O" class. The new form of a fore end called to improve seaworthiness became appreciable difference from predecessors. Also machinery power raised to 4640hp, however soon diesels were throttled down to 4340hp.
Submarines were built under 1927 Programme.
Modernizations: early 1930s, all survived: engine power was reduced to 4340 / 1635 h. p.; maximal surface speed was 17 kts
1930s, Pandora, Parthian, Phoenix, Proteus: - 1 x 1 - 102/40 QF Mk IV; + 1 x 1 - 102/40 QF Mk XII
1933, Perseus: - 1 x 1 - 120/40; + 1 x 1 - 102/40 QF Mk XII
1941 - 1942, Pandora, Parthian: were converted to cargo carriers. Spare torpedoes and part of batteries were removed, part of ballast tanks was converted to hold aviation petrol.
1943 - 1944, all survived: + 1 x 1 - 20/70 Oerlikon Mk II/IV, submarines also received ability to carry 18 M2 mines instead of torpedoes, + type 286W or type 291W radar
1/1946, Proteus: 1 x 1 - 102/40 S Mk I, 1 x 1 - 20/70 Mk II S/M, 8 - 533 TT, type 286W or type 291W radar, type 118 sonar
Naval service: Poseidon was lost in the Far East as a result of collision with Japanese merchant vessel 9.6.1931. Phoenix was sunk by DCs from Italian escort destroyer Albatros E of Sicily 16.7.1940. Perseus was sunk on a mine in Mediterranean 6.12.1941. Parthian was lost in Mediterranean 11.8.1943 (probably on a mine). Pandora was sunk 1.4.1942 by Italian aircraft in dock at Malta, she was salvaged in 1943 and handed over for broken up.
