Project history: A little increased version of Settembrini class with larger fuel stowage and strengthened armament (second gun was added, number of spare torpedoes was increased). Construction was partially double-hulled. Galileo Galilei was captured 19.6.1940 in Red Sea by British trawler Moonstone after crew of submarine has poisoned with the gases from ventilating system.
Modernizations: 1942-1944: + type 286W or type 291W radar, presumably type 129 sonar
