Project history: Wooden-hulled 2nd class despatch/gunvessels, design was approved in 1855. Enlarged Arrow class. Four more units were ordered but never built. Most were rerated as sloops in 1859-1860 but all were reverted to gunvessels in 1862.

Modernizations: None.

Naval service: Osprey wrecked in the SE African coast near Klippen Point 30.5.1867. Cormorant was sunk in action with the Taku forts in Peiho River (China) 28.6.1859.
