Project history: Designed as a cheaper alternative to the 'Hunt' class MCMVs by reducing the number of roles, hence the designation 'Single Role Minehunter' (SRMH). Despite this the unit cost was some £40m in 1990, allowing only three to be built for the price of two 'Hunts'. The modular design permits them to be equipped as minesweepers if required.

Problems with the Type 2093 variable-depth sonar delayed full acceptance of Sandown until late 1991 or early 1992, but the design is considered very successful, and six have been ordered for Saudi Arabia. Spain has also negotiated a technology-transfer deal to permit a variant of the design to be built locally.

Modernizations: 2006-2009, all survived: - 2x PAP 104 Mk 5 USV, NAUTIS-M CCS; + 2x Seafox C USV, NAUTIS 3 CCS

Naval service: No significant events.
