Project history: Under considerable political pressure to provide defence for offshore resources in the new 200-mile Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), the Royal Navy initiated studies of sea-keeping characteristics. These established criteria of length, beam, freeboard and subdivision, and thereafter commercial designs were might which approximated to the parameters. The best answer appeared to be a pair of trawler-type fishery protection vessels, Jura and Westra, operated by the Scottish Department of Fisheries. Jura (P 296) was chartered in 1975 and armed with a 40mm gun. She proved successful and the design of the 'Island' class was adapted from it.

Modernizations: None.

Naval service: When HMS Jersey became operational in January 1977, Jura was returned to her owners.
